Sportswoman of the Year Alexus Laird has captured two gold medals in the Cana Zone IV Swimming Championship, bringing Seychelles’ total number of the gold hue to three.
Gold medallist in the 50m backstroke with a time of 30.68 seconds at the 12th African Swimming Championship in Bloemfontein, South Africa, Laird was the first to touch the wall in the female 17 years and over 50m backstroke final during the morning session on Friday in a championship record time of 30.96 seconds in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
She captured her second gold medal in the afternoon session on Friday. Swimming in the female 17 years and over 200m freestyle final, Laird again finished first in another championship record time of 2 minutes 11.26 seconds (2:11.26).
Seychelles now has three gold medals at the championship which was to end yesterday after Hayden Ah-Wan claimed the 13 to 14 years category 800m freestyle gold medal in a time of 9:31.54, which is also a new championship record.
The Seychelles team also boast five more medals – two silver and three bronze.
The silver medallists are Laird (female 17 years and over 50m butterfly with a time of 29.94 seconds) and Lenel Ah-Wan (male 13 to 14 years 50m butterfly with a time of 27.93 seconds).
The three bronze medals have been won by Hayden Ah-Wan (male 13 to 14 years 50m butterfly with a time of 28.00 seconds), Therese Soukoup (female under-14 800m freestyle with a time of 10:31.54) and Laird (female over-15 800m freestyle with a time of 9:45.86).
