Kitson Julie, Keddy Agnes get ready for African Boxing Championship |11 May 2017

Seychelles will be sending two boxers to this year’s African Boxing Championship scheduled from May 27 to June 4 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

Comeback kid Kitson Julie and Keddy Agnes are the two fighters preparing for the championship which will serve as qualifier for the 2017 World Boxing Championship in Hamburg, Germany.

Former Olympian Julie will have another go at an African Boxing Championship gold medal this year after achieving the feat in the light welterweight (64-kg) category 2004 in Gaborone, Botswana.

He paved his way to the highest step of the medals podium in the light welterweight division with killer punches. The win earned him automatic qualification for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, but he lost 22-51 to Iranian-born Australian Anoushirvan Nourian in his first fight.

In fact, he is the only Seychellois boxer to have won a gold medal at the African Boxing Championship, but this time, he will be competing in the heavy weight (91kg) class.

Only Kitson Julie has won a gold medal for Seychelles at the championship and that came in 2004 in Gaborone Botswana.

As for Keddy Agnes, he has never won a medal at the African Boxing Championship and is roaring to go this time in the super heavy weight (91+kg) division.

Seychelles Boxing Federation’s secretary general Edmond Folette told Sports NATION that four boxers were to make the trip, but the team was cut to two as both Nelson Molle and Lorenzo Bonne have not been training regularly.

A for two-time Sportsman of the Year Andrique Allisop, Sports NATION has learned that he has taken a break from the sport.

Himself a former boxer and winner of a number of medals in international competitions, coach Rival Payet will accompany the two fighters along with doctor Ken Freminot.

The delegation is expected to leave on Thursday May 25 and while in Brazzaville, coach Payet and doctor Freminot will also follow a cutman course. In boxing, a cutman treats the bleeding and swelling to a boxer's face during a fight.
