African Sambo Championship - Seychellois Cheryl Marie wins silver medal |13 May 2017

Seychellois Cheryl Marie has won a silver medal in the women’s 64kg sambo sport category of the ongoingAfrican Sambo Championship.

During the second part of the first day of competition yesterday at the Palais des Sports, Marie of Praslin met Paule Sitcheping in the final and lost 0-4 after just 56 seconds in the 4-minute fight.

“I am happy I won a silver medal in my first fight. I did my best and I have to thank my coach and members of my family for their support,” said the 17-year-old who is also a judoka.

She received her medal from youth and sports principal secretary Fabian Palmyre.

The competition started yesterday morning with the preliminary rounds and continued last night with the opening ceremony followed by eight finals.

Twelve countries ‒ hosts Seychelles, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, DR Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Cameroon, Benin, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Egypt and Niger ‒ are taking part in the championship which continues today at 10am at the Palais des Sports. The finals are scheduled for 1.30pm and the closing ceremony at 4pm.

The results of the other seven fights are as follows:

● Men’s 57k sambo sport: Mohammed Zelmoumi of Morocco beat Abdoul-Rachid of Niger 7-1

● Men’s 82kg combat sambo: Epoune Batamag of Cameroon beat Dadreddine Diani of Morocco 2-0

● Men’s 68kg sport sambo: El Kars Abderrahim of Morocco beat Sadfii Mohamed Tarekl of Tunisia 8-3

● Women’s 72kg sport sambo: Feugang Kuethe Edwige of Cameroon beat Marim Yahya Zakaria of Egypt 4-0

● Men’s 100kg combat sambo: Karrouti Reda of Morocco beat Imarirene Mohamed of Algeria 4-0

● Men’s 82kg sport sambo: Messi Louis of Cameroon beat Oulhaj Marouan of Morocco 8-3

● Men’s 68kg combat sambo: Msallmi Saifallah of Tunisia best Amimi Ilias of Morocco 4-2
