African Sambo Championship |16 May 2017

Chairperson Athanase happy with overall organisation and results

“I am very happy with what I saw during the two-dayAfrican Sambo Championship,” Monique Athanase has said.

The Seychelles Sambo Federation chairperson was speaking to Sports NATION yesterday.

“All the fighters and representatives of both the African and international samba federations were happy with how the championship has been organised,” added Ms Athanase.

She even added that because Seychelles did a good job in hosting the African Championship, the officials have been asking us to host a world championship.

“It is quite flattering, but we will consider the proposition come the right time,” added Ms Athanase.

All fights took place at the Palais des Sports.

Seychelles not only did a good job hosting the competition, the country’s athletes also performed well to win 7 medals ‒ 1 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze ‒ to finish fourth on the final medals standings.

Hailing from Praslin, former Sportsman of the Year Dominique Dugasse won Seychelles’ only gold medal at the championship, winning the very last fight ‒ the men’s 100+kg sambo sport category final ‒ on a 3-0 score against Saanouni Makrem of Tunisia.

The two silver medals were won by Amanda Payet in the women’s 90+kg sport sambo category and Cheryl Marie in the women’s 64kg sambo sport division.

The four bronze medallists are Roge Gabriel (90+kg men’s sambo sport), Lanndio Victorin (62kg men’s sambo sport), Brian Alcindor (74kg men’s combat sambo) and Faniry Finesse (68kg men’s sambo sport).

Morocco was the top medal winner with 12 medals ‒ 7 gold and 5 silver.

Cameroon also finished with 7 gold medals, but captured two silver and 4 bronze for a total of 13. With one gold medal, three silver and one bronze, Tunisia took third place overall.
