Book Buzz Victoria by Daisy Goodwin |09 September 2017

Blurb: “In June 1837, the eighteen-year-old Victoria wakes up to find that she is Queen of the most powerful nation in the world. But will she be Queen in her own right, or a puppet controlled by her mother and the sinister Sir John Conroy? Can this tiny girl prevail against the men like her uncle, the Duke of Cumberland, who believe that women are too hysterical too rule?”

Book review: ‘Victoria’ is a fictional yet historical novel about the life and times of the iconic Queen whose regnal name is now our capital’s name. This periodic novel published last year works as a side-along to the television series of the same title, currently playing on ITV channel (available on Cable & Wireless TV). Daisy Goodwin’s take on Victoria’s life is lively and effervescent, and can become deliciously addictive to readers who enjoy historical romance and drama. Goodwin takes us on Victoria’s journey of becoming Queen of the British Empire at the young age of eighteen; her evolution from a shy bookworm to a strong Victorian lady capable of defying her mother and the vicious Sir John; her infatuation with her Prime Minister, her beloved “Lord M”; and her marriage to the German heartthrob, Prince Albert. Although set in the 19th century, Goodwin’s writing is never over-complicated nor is it exaggerated. Her easy, simple writing style is perfect for anybody.

Memorable quote: “I do not care for the name Alexandrina. Now that I am Queen, I have decided I shall call myself by my middle name, Victoria. It is my own.”
