Sports Awards of the Year 2017 - Finalists to be decided tomorrow |26 December 2017

Except for bodybuilding, gymnastics and swimming, all sports federations and associations have handed in the names of their best male and female athletes in the young (under-18 years) category and senior division and it is now the work of the selection committee to shortlist the finalists for the 34th Sports Awards of the Year 2017 crowning ceremony.

In fact, the selection committee headed by Jean Larue will meet for the first time tomorrow and during the deliberations, the list of athletes will be filtered down to the top 10 male senior athletes and top 10 female senior athletes, while five young athletes will be selected from each male and female categories for the Young Athlete of the Year prize.

On the other hand, the organising committee has also confirmed that the Sports Awards of the Year 2017 crowning ceremony will take place on January 19, 2018.

The annual event that rewards athletes for their good performance throughout the year will again be held at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort.

It is certain that a new Sportsman of the Year will be crowned as outgoing Sportsman of the Year 2016 Allan Julie doesn’t feature among the best in sailing this year.

The fact that the Seychelles Swimming Association (SSA) is yet to hand in the filled in forms with the names of the best athletes, it remains to be seen if Sportswoman of the Year 2016, swimmer Alexus Laird can defend her title or relinquish it.

The outgoing young male and female athletes for the year 2016 are tennis player Damien Laporte and swimmer Felicity Passon.

Laporte has once again been chosen as the best and he stands a chance of defending his title.

But until the SAA hands in the forms, we won’t know if three-time reigning young female athlete of the year Passon will stand a chance of keeping her trophy.

Other awards to be presented during the crowning ceremony for the year 2017 include the honorary awards to people who have contributed in sports, best primary, best secondary and best post-secondary schools, coach of the year, best technical official, best federation and special award.

As is usually the case, the night will be divided into two parts – the presentation of certificates and prizes to the best athletes and people who have made significant contributions in Seychelles’ sports, and a cocktail dinner.

Tickets for the event cost R500 and are on sale at the National Sports Council, Stad Linite, and at the Sports Training Centre in the Stad Popiler car park. For more information, please call 4671200.
