Ellen Carolus sworn in as new Supreme Court judge |09 March 2018
Ellen Carolus was yesterday sworn in as judge of the Supreme Court.
Master of the Supreme Court since October 2015, her appointment follows recommendations made to President Danny Faure by the Constitutional Appointments Authority (CAA) and consultations with the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly.
Judge Carolus took the Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution and the Judicial Oath in the presence of President Faure, Vice-President Vincent Meriton, Designated Minister Macsuzy Mondon, members of the Judiciary, other distinguished guests and members of her family.
Ms Carolus holds a Bachelors Degree in Law from the University of Mauritius, and sat for her Bar examination at the Council of Legal Education in Mauritius in 2002.
She has also followed specialist training courses in legal drafting organised by the Commonwealth for African member States.
In 2003 she joined the Department of Legal Affairs as State Counsel, and rose to the rank of Principal State Counsel. In 2010 she moved to the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) where she served as the director of Legal Affairs before moving into the private sector until her appointment in 2015 as Master of the Supreme Court, a position she held until yesterday.
Speaking to the local press soon after taking her oaths as the fourth female judge of the Supreme Court, Judge Carolus expressed her joy and pride in this new milestone in her life and career.
“I am very proud because it is a great honour to be appointed Judge of the Supreme Court,” she said.
Judge Carolus who has been in the Judiciary for over two years now said she is already contributing her part in the advancement of the institution and in her position she has also been able to see all the challenges it faces and has also learned a lot of new things that need to be done to advance the Judiciary.
“Now I will be in a better position to help meet these challenges. But the appointment is also a good thing for my personal development,” Judge Carolus added.
