Artists urged to create career profile as marketing tool |29 March 2018
Artists are being urged to create career profiles as a tool to market themselves and their work.
In this light, the National Arts Council (NAC) in collaboration with the Seychelles Media Association (SMA) organised a workshop for artists with the aim of showing them the importance of marketing themselves through creating a personal profile, regularly updating their profiles if they already have one and using social media as a platform for marketing.
The workshop was held on March 16 at the NAC conference room and was facilitated by the chairperson of the SMA, Barbara Coopoosamy.
Well known singers Jean-Marc Volcy, who has his full detailed musical profile on line and Joenise Juliette, who already has a hand detailed profile on her musical career catalogued, imparted knowledge on the issue with their colleagues, comprising mostly of young artists.
Following this sensitisation workshop, the artists were invited to a second meeting one week later (March 23) to actually go through a profiling exercise by the SMA to gather adequate information for the creation of a document and network base that will be used to promote them and the work they do.
The vice-chairperson of SMA, Thelma Pool, explained that it will be to the benefit of all artists to have a profile as it will give them visibility and also allow them to be recognised by locals and foreigners.
Artists had to fill up forms on their personal details, education, the forms of art they practice, their work collection, public performances/exhibitions, personal achievements etc…
However, only three artists turned up for this profile exercise with the SMA’s vice-chairperson Telma Pool and ordinary member Tessa Henderson. The were music producer Ringo Joubert, musician, composer/songwriter Antoine Souris and musician/song writer George Payet.
According to Joubert and Souris, who have never had a personal profile on their music career, the profile will be an opportunity for artists, sponsors and the public at large to know them better.
“It can really open doors for the success of any artist,” said Joubert.
Musician/songwriter George Payet said a similar profiling document of artists existed in the 1990s but has never been updated.
Because of the poor turnout for the profiling exercise, it will be repeated on a date to be announced later.
