Volleyball - Level one course to attract more local coaches |25 April 2018
In its attempt to attract more certified coaches, the local volleyball governing body is conducting a five-day level one coaching course which is presently taking place at the Palais des Sports, Roche Caïman.
The sessions are being led by local the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (IFVB) coaching instructor Bernard Denis, who is getting the help of several other local individuals directly involved in the sport.
The work was officially launched on Monday by the president of the Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga) Antonio Gopal at the association’s secretariat at Stad Linite.
The coaching course is targeting physical education teachers, players who wish to become a coach after their playing days, ex-players who wish to become a coach and also practicing coaches who want to be officially certified.
Among the areas being covered are technical skills development, tactics, formations, systems, different playing patterns, physical conditioning as well as prevention and treatment of injuries.
Other than improving the knowledge and competence of the coaches and teachers so that they may gain recognition as FIVB coaches, the course is also aimed at presenting the most recent trends of the modern game of volleyball.
It will also teach the basic rules, techniques and the values of volleyball; from the invention of the game as well as how best to introduce the sport to beginners. Relevant coaching methods and exercises will also be covered alongside teaching the best techniques to help players improve.
Compared to other courses previously held locally, this one is divided into two parts with the Palais des Sports hosting the practical areas only, while the theory part is being done online.
Those taking part must complete the online session one month prior to the start of the practical session.
Mr Denis explained that the course participants are responsible for their theory sessions, while the local instructors will teach and assess them on the practical side of the course only.
He added that the Seychelles Volleyball Federation (SVF) has been very privileged to obtain the full funding for thecoaching course, as the number of such courses around the world has been reduced considerably.
This, he said, is becauseall national federations must finance their technical courses from their own sources.
