Golf: Alix Esparon, Tim Horpinitch triumph in Gonthier tournament |21 August 2013

Alix Esparon and Tim Horpinitch carded a brilliant better ball score of 46 points – 10 under par – to win the annual Gonthier golf tournament played last Saturday at the Seychelles Golf Club, Anse Aux Pins.

The annual Gonthier golf tournament is sponsored by long serving patrons of Seychelles golf, Mr and Mrs Gonthier. Marking their 50th wedding anniversary, Mr and Mrs Gonthier were present in high spirits to witness some 18 pairings battle it out for the attractive appliances and household items that the generous couple had put on offer for the winners.
Played under a better ball stableford format, it was clear that it would take an excellent combined score of well under par to win.

The team of David Deltel and Louis Vandagne, both single handicappers, set the bar high with an opening nine-hole score of 23 points (5 under par). A few other pairings were hot on their heels, including the unique pairing of veteran Charlie Morin and new member Jaden Deltel, the eight-year-old son of David Deltel, playing in only his second golf tournament!

The youngest golfer in Seychelles ever to receive a handicap, Jaden competes against adult golfers and win (having won in his very first individual tournament the previous Thursday)! Surely Jaden is a golfing star in the making . . .

The back nine saw some amazing golf with a little touch of magic from Jemmy Esther who played a sublime shot on hole 15 to card his very first hole in one! This incredible shot helped Jemmy and partner Dominique Morin into second place with a points tally of 44.

Charlie Morin and young Jaden Deltel performed outstandingly well to come in with 43 points to take third place.
Fourth place was earned by Jerry Jean-Baptiste and William Weidner (professional) with 42 points.

The prizes, which included electric toasters, kettles, frying pans, fans and more, were handed out to the winners by the sponsors – Mr and Mrs Gonthier – and club captain Alex Ellenberger. Mr Gonthier thanked all golfers for their involvement and went on to commit to yet another Gonthier tournament in 2014.
