New political party launched |26 August 2013
A new political party -- Seselwa United Party (SUP) – was officially launched on Saturday during a convention at the Seychelles Trading Company’s conference room on Latanier Road.
The convention was led by Ralph Volcère, one of the founding members of the new party and also former leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) which has now ceased to exist.
Mr Volcère presented the constitution of the SUP to those present, who included the leader of the Seychelles National Party (SNP) Wavel Ramkalawan. He was the guest of honour as he and Mr Volcère will be working in close collaboration.
The objectives of the SUP is to establish a government of national unity in Seychelles through a democratic process, to identify with democratic and national unity movements worldwide, to unite the Seychellois people selecting the best man for the job, promote active and free participation of all in the process of nation building and to develop the leadership potential of all Seychellois, each according to his ability.
SUP will be represented by the colours black and orange.
“Black represents the first Africans who came to Seychelles as slaves and formed our race. Black also represents the darkest days in our country whereby we were a one party state,” Mr Volcère said when explaining the adoption of his party’s colours.
“As orange is a fresh and vibrant colour, it represents all that the party needs to take power,” he added.
Those present at the convention could take a form and apply for membership.
