Seychellois boxers ready for action
Seychellois boxers have been watching from the stands and will only throw punches later this week as they begin their medal hunt in the ongoing International Boxing Association (Aiba) World Amateur Boxing Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Seychellois Andrique Allisop (60kg), Jovette Jean (75kg) and Keddy Agnes (91kg) have to take to the centre of the ring with great confidence and put on brave performances against their opponents in the championships from October 14-26.
Jovette Jean is the first Seychellois to go in action tomorrow (Thursday October 17) against Uzbek Azizbek Abdugofurov in the middleweight (75kg) category being contested by 48 fighters.
A win for Jean will see him set up a second-round matchup against Navruz Jafoev of Tajikistan on Saturday October 19.
Fighting in the heavyweight (91kg) class, Keddy Agnes has received a first-round bye and will take on Manpreet Singh on Friday October 18.
If Agnes manages to get the better of Singh, he will move to the third round on October 21 when he will meet the winner of the bout between Teymur Mammadov (Azerbaijan) and Efetobor Apochi (Nigeria).
A total of 47 boxers are contesting the medals in the heavyweight category.
Sportsman of the Year Andrique Allisop, who fought at the London Olympic Games last year after earning qualification in the ring, go into action in the 60kg class second round on Sunday October 20 against Mexican Lindolfo Delgado.
Both Allisop and Delgado earned byes straight into the second round in the 46-boxer draw sheet.
The three boxers are accompanied by coaches Jerry Legras and Rival Payet.
