Local artists perform for the mentally ill |23 October 2004
Staff nurse at the Victoria Hospital and organizer Patrick Henriette said that the event was "a really big success" and that he was pleased with the turn out of spectators.
The event began with a spiritual gathering, which included testimonials presented by the mentally ill patients and songs.
Chapters were also read from the Bible, followed by a reflection period.
Talks about mental health and how to deal with it were held to create awareness on the issue.
This was followed by a cultural show performed by Patrick Victor, Young Blood, John Philoé, François Havelock, Jahmi, Andrew Sabbedin, and Regis Duval.
The songs performed were especially written for the occasion.
Mr Henriette said that the mentally ill also took part in the performances, making it difficult to distinguish them from the crowd.
He added that this was an achievement in itself, as it's important for the patients to get accustomed to interaction with the real world, so that it is not a shock for them when they are released into the community after their treatment.
"Mental health involves other dimensions," he said, adding that while the medical factor is of importance, the social side plays a relevant role too.
He said it was important that the stigma associated with mentally ill people be removed, which is being made possible through such events.
Mr Henriette thanked members of the organising committee, volunteers from other communities and the artists for their commitment and participation.
