Football: Land Marine Cup-Jonathan Bibi's late penalty earns La Passe semifinal berth |29 October 2004
SMB who came into the match as the underdogs got off to a fast start and they even got the ball inside La Passe's net in the 10th minute but Cyril Edmond's effort was ruled out after he was adjudged to have fouled keeper Vincent Euphrasie by referee-of-the-day Jacques Andre.
In the 23rd minute, SMB's Che Dorasamy chipped a clever pass over La Passe's defence towards strike partner, Joseph Marcelin on the left of the area but his fierce shot flew over the cross-bar with the goal begging.
La Passe who were without prolific scorer Malagasy Eric 'Didy' Rajaobery responded in the 35th minute through Jonathan Bibi who unleashed a powerful volley from outside the six-yard box but SMB's custodian, Eddy Barbé, formerly with St Louis, pulled out a top drawer save to deny him.
Despite desperate attempts on goals by both sides the first half ended goalless.
After the break SMB continued from where they had left off in the first half. In the 70th minute substitute Sam Sophie danced into the area, exchanged a pass with tireless Serge Asba before shooting straight into goalie Euphrasie's gloves.
Five minutes from time, La Passe Malagasy striker Amissy Voavy failed to killed off the contest as his out-side-of-the-boot volley was parried into corner by keeper Barbé.
With no winner after normal time the match had to go into extra-time.
Aware of the importance of scoring first both sides came out roaring to get the upperhand.
Again coach Vojo Gardesevic's La Passe and Roger Labonté's SMB squandered their goal scoring chances in the first period of extra-time depriving the game of spectacle. The match looked like going into a penalty shoot-out until the 108th minute when referee Andre awarded La Passe a penalty.
Spot-kick specialist Jonathan Bibi stepped up to wrong-foot goalie Barbé and put his team in the lead.
There were countless efforts by SMB to level matters but to no avail.
Meanwhile Sports Nation learned that the industrious Jonathan Bibi along with Red Star marksman Wilnes Brutus have been selected by the Seychelles Football Federation (SFF) to go on a two-month training camp with Italian Serie A side Cremonese on the team's own request.
According to SFF's secretary general, Wilhem Boniface "The Italian team (Cremonese) have asked us to send the names of two young players from Seychelles who can follow a two-month training camp with them. We have chosen Wilnes Brutus and Jonathan Bibi but so far we haven't received any feedback on the matter from their clubs (La Passe and Red Star).
