Golf: British Airways Trophy- Two in a row for Ah-Yu |27 January 2005
Jocelyn was playing up to his standard on the front nine, but failed to score as he wanted. He missed shots and putts when least expected and could only manage a net 35 on the front nine.
As for Sajnish Puri, who had been absent from the golf course lately, he fired on all cylinders and produced good, straight shots. He led all scores with a net 32 after the first nine holes.
While Ah-Yu, who was almost out of contention for a place on the medals podium after his poor front nine performance of net 35, thought of a new strategy for the second nine, Charlie Morin struggled somewhere on the fairways and greens. With a score of 42, one wonders if age is not settling in on Morin. But he proved everybody wrong on the second nine.
By the time, Puri had reached the club house after having played the front nine, the first group was almost halfway through the second nine and Ah-Yu was really putting his strategy into good use.
Ah-Yu hit an impressive score of 31 net on the back nine for a gross 66.
Everybody waited for the arrival of Puri's group as he seemed to be Ah-Yu's only challenger at that point.
Unfortunately, he faltered along the way as he could not bare the pressure. He did not know whether to laugh or cry when he wrote his score of 52 on the board. The big score wrecked his chances of finishing among the top five.
However, Andrade (68) played some consistent golf to finish in second position in front of Louis Vandange on the count-back rule.
Though Morin failed to make it amongst the top three finishers, he came in with a good score of 32 on the back nine. This proves that he is not past his best yet and with more training he could still be a force to be reckoned with.
After the competition, Celine Rahemtulla from British Airways, presented the winners with their prizes.
All club members would like to thank Mrs Rahemtulla and British Airways for sponsoring the tournament.
It is to note that the British Airways Trophy has been an annual event on the Seychelles Golf Association's calendar for the past 17 years.
The next competition, the Barclays Bank Monthly Mug, is scheduled for Saturday.
