The tropical islands beat traditionally romantic choices such as Paris and Venice to the number one spot, proving that far flung destinations are currently in vogue with couples.

Seychelles also beat the popular island getaways of Hawaii, St Lucia and neighbouring Mauritius

The 3,000 British holiday makers who took part in the survey were also asked how romantic they expect their partners to be on holiday.

Nearly two thirds of women said they would love to be proposed to while away and almost a quarter of men admitted that they would like their women to pop the question on holiday.
