Commonwealth Quiz Finals-Independent School, Beau Vallon Secondary, Polytechnic winners |17 March 2005
The finals of the competition which took place on Monday March 14 at the Mont Fleuri Secondary School auditorium was divided into three categories: primary, secondary and post- secondary schools.
The winners in the primary school category were the trio of Nicolas Radegonde, Yannick Choppy and Bertrand Bijoux from the Independent School while the prizes for the runner- up went to Ian Sirame, Effie Laporte and Steve Labaleine from Mont Fleuri Primary School.
The team of Lisa Kisubi, Emilie Gonthier and Annabelle Constance from Beau Vallon Secondary were the grand winners in the secondary school category. The runner-up team comprised Elvis Uranie, Malshini Senaratne and Annick Henriette from Anse Boileau Secondary School.
The trio of Terry Rose, Shamira Leon and Fabianna Bonne – first year students from the Polytechnic – were winners in the post-secondary institution category while another team from the Polytechnic comprising second year students Samita Dodin, Sam Dodin and Selina Vergheese came out as runner-up.
All winners in the three categories went home with a certificate, a dictionary donated by the British High Commission and a starter pack sponsored by telecommunications company, Airtel. The runners-up received a certificate and an Airtel starter pack.
The participants received their prizes from the British High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ms Diana Skingle and Airtel's Senior Marketing Executive Retha Dorfling.
To reach the final the team from Independent School eliminated teams from Plaisance and Bel Eau primary schools while Mont Fleuri Primary School had to compete against La Retraite and La Rosière schools.
According to Mona Delpech, coordinator of the co-curriculum unit, 10 primary, eight secondary and only two post secondary schools participated in the competition.
The elimination rounds took place on February 22 and 23.
This activity is organized each year to commemorate Commonwealth Day which is celebrated on the second Monday of March.
