Football: Land Marine Cup-Red Star thrash Baie Ste Anne 96ers 7-1

Radegonde opened the floodgates for Red Star

Red Star started brightly but their first goal looked to have an element of offside to the move that led to Baie Ste Anne 96ers conceding a corner as Vincent Volcère threatened to run through. Volcère lofted the corner which Ted Radegonde thumped into the roof of the net after the loose ball had bobbled around in the penalty area.

Baie Ste Anne 96ers could not get their acts together as they were too worried about stopping Red Star’s attackers.

They created a half chance in the 20th minute as their Kenyan midfielder Daniel Odidi flashed a shot across the face of goal.

In the 21st minute, Baie Ste Anne 96ers were furious with referee Gerald Gonthier who awarded Red Star a penalty after defender Marcus Zialor’ strong tackle stopped Radley Monthy in his stride. Volcère stepped up to tuck the ball past goalie Kenneth Lesperance.

Baie Ste Anne 96ers looked disorganised and two minutes later, Monthy stole the ball from a defender to release Wilnes Brutus who elegantly drifted past goalie Lesperance to increase his team’s lead to 3-0.

In the 28th minute, the game was held up for several minutes after Baie Ste Anne 96ers’ goalie Lesperance fell awkwardly and after an initial check, the gravity of his injury necessitated transportation to hospital. Red Star’s physiotherapist Maggie Lespoir coordinated matters and Lesperance was transported to hospital 20 minutes later.

The incident somewhat had an effect on the players’ mood and outfield player Shanky Vidot took over in goal with Donny Lesperance coming on.

Red Star scored a fourth goal as Brutus set up Bernard St Ange who played the ball in between the substitute goalie’s legs.

Baie Ste Anne 96ers tried to carry the game to Red Star in the second half and in the 49th minute, captain Dereck Omath centred to Odidi whose low left foot shot sailed under goalie Joel Lesperance’s desperate dive to reduce the deficit to 1-4.

Just past the hour, Brutus burst through to shoot past goalie Vidot to make it 5-1.

It was only in the 86th minute that Red Star scored again after substitute Jemmy Edmond was hacked down by Basil Hoareau in the penalty area. Referee Gonthier pointed to the penalty spot and the younger St Ange brother, Nicholas, who had come on minutes earlier, placed the ball far from goalie Vidot’s reach.

Red Star sealed Baie Ste Anne 96ers’ fate on the stroke of full-time. Substitute Dan Pharce collected Brutus’ long pass to beat goalie Vidot and make it 7-1.
