Aiba XIII World Senior Boxing Championship-Jean bows out to American Melson |17 November 2005

But on Tuesday night (November 15) on the third day, Seychellois Jovet Jean left the Association internationale de boxe amateur (AIBA) XIII World Senior Boxing Championship in Mianyang city, China.

Fighting on ring B and in the red corner, hard-hitter Jean’s adventure in the 69-kg category was stopped by American pugilist Boyd Arnold Melson, a crop-topped 2004 World Military champion.

Twenty-four- year-old welterweight Melson, a US Army field artillery officer who beat Japanese Hirano Yoshiyuki 24-12 in his first fight, won the bout against Jean by RSCOS (Referee Stopped Contest Outclass Score) in the third of the four-round bout.

It must be noted that Jean received a 10-month scholarship from the Confejes (Conférence des ministres de la Jeunesse et des Sports des pays ayant le français en partage) and the Fonds Francophone pour la préparation olympique and has been training at the Tunisian Boxing Centre in Tunis since May.

Jean was the light middleweight (75-kg) gold medallist of both the Indian Ocean Islands Games in Mauritius in 2003 and the YMCA competition in India in 2004.

Speaking to Agence France Presse (AFP), Melson, whose father is a retired First Sergeant in the US Army, said that his overall objective is to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and reach the medal rounds of the boxing tournament there.

It is worth noting that Cuba and Russia are favourites to win the bulk of the 11 gold medals at stake at the biennial world championships.
