International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking-Leaders urged to be exemplary in promoting a drug-free society |27 June 2006

“Through our comportment, let us give and show (the children and youth) the best of ourselves…,” says Minister Meriton in his message on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse & Trafficking commemorated Monday June 26.
Minister Meriton’s message reads:

“As we commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking under the United Nations theme ‘Drugs: It’s Not Child’s Play,’ it is important that we use this occasion to renew our fight against drugs and strengthen our efforts to educate our children on a drugs-free lifestyle.

“There is a higher consumption of drugs. Our resources are being stretched to their limits. And we are also noticing many drug-related problems; namely an increase in the number of cases of mental illness in our young people and in cases of drug-related crime and violence.

“It is important therefore that we focus upon the significance of the UN theme ‘Drugs: It’s Not Child’s Play,’ and in particular how best to protect our children from becoming victims. As a society, we need to impress upon our children the message that drugs are dangerous. Drugs are not cool and drugs are not to be toyed with.

“In the fight against drugs, we need to pool together our resources, efforts and ideas and be guided by a common and united vision that our families and society deserve and need to be free from the scourge of drugs. I therefore appeal to all our partners in Government and in the private sector, to parents, educators, church and community leaders and everyone in society to reflect upon the significance of this day.

“I would also like to launch a special message to the adults in our society who influence our children and youth. To those who are in leadership positions; in the media, in politics, in sports, or in music, we have a duty to be exemplary in promoting a drug free society.  Through our comportment, let us give and show them the best of ourselves. Let us live the virtues that will uphold ideals that give our children strength, respect and confidence in themselves. Let our children have the right to say NO to drugs and lead a drugs-free life!”
