Golf: Barclays Monthly Mug competition-Mayadas ends 26-month dry spell |30 August 2006

He broke his duck with a score of 66 nett in the monthly competition played on a medal format and worth a crystal mug sponsored by Barclays Bank (Seychelles).

Catney Laporte pipped Zee Rizvi into second place on a count-back after they both finished with a nett 67.

After Saturday’s win which counts for the month of August, Mayadas becomes the seventh winner of the competition this year.

Hevens Andrade is the only golfer to win two mugs this year – in February and June. The other winners are Jerry Jean-Baptiste (January), Sunil Shah (March), Godfrey Andrade (April), Andrew Hoareau (May) and Damien Hoareau (July).

The Barclays Monthly Mug is played on a medal format designed to give all players an equal chance of winning as they are given handicaps according to their ranking. Better players are given higher handicaps and they have to work harder and stay focus to win.
The winner is decided from the number of shots remaining after the handicap has been taken away from the total taken to complete the course.

The format tends to bring the best out of the players as they give their utmost to gain advantage over their opponents.

It is for these reasons that the Barclays Monthly Mug competitions are highly competitive, well-attended and enjoyable to watch.
