Boxing-Local punchers on two assignments in Kenya |13 October 2006

The Seychellois pugilists selected for the competitions are Dave César (51-kg), Leroy Léon (54-kg), MacFarlène Estrale (57-kg), Jean-Paul Mellie (60-kg), Kitson Julie (64-kg), Alvin Gabriel (69-kg), Andreix Ladouce (75-kg), Aaron Havelock (91-kg) and Patrick Camille (+91-kg).

They are accompanied by Cuban coach Pedro Pacheco and his assistant Rival Payet. Seychelles Amateur Boxing Federation (SABF) chairman Kenneth Nalletamby is the head of the delegation.

The first competition is the Kenya Open boxing championship inside the Bora Bora Hall, in Kawangware, Nairobi. It was scheduled to start Thursday.

The local boxers will also participate in the Inter-Cities boxing extravaganza which will begin on Monday October 16 at the Nairobi City Hall.  The competition will end on Friday October 20.
The event, which was held in Dar-es-Salaam in 2004 and in Kigali in 2005, will form part of the Kenyatta Day celebrations.

Boxing teams from Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania), Kampala (Uganda), Kigali (Rwanda), Bujumbura (Burundi), Lusaka (Zambia), Kitwe (Zambia), Arusha (Tanzania), Mwanza (Tanzania), Jinja (Uganda) and Port Louis (Mauritius) have also confirmed their participation.

The local boxers are expected home on Sunday October 22.
This is the third outing for local boxers this year. In the inaugural edition of the African Cup of Nations, held in Libreville, Gabon, Seychelles won three medals – a silver (Kitson Julie, 64-kg) and two bronze (Jean-Paul Mellie, 60-kg) and (Patrick Camille, +91-kg).

In the Cairo International Meet, Mellie again finished amongst the medals, winning a bronze in the 60-kg division.
