Farquhar braces for cyclone Bondo |21 December 2006

According to reports from the Seychelles National Meteorological Services, Bondo is expected to affect the regions of Farquhar Island this morning with winds gusting up to 200 km/h.

“IDC was informed of a potential tropical cyclone yesterday (December 19) and has then been evacuating people currently on Farquhar to Mahe since 5 a.m. There were a total of 35 people on Farquhar, the majority of whom have been already evacuated, along with three children who were meant to be spending Christmas and New Year with their parents,” a communiqué from the company said yesterday.

“IDC plans to leave a small complement of staff on Farquhar who will be responsible for the swift restoration of activities by ensuring accessibility to the island which will serve as the starting point,” the communiqué added.

According to the communiqué, those people remaining on Farquhar have adequate shelter to protect themselves from the cyclone and the company is currently in contact with relatives of all staff concerned.

“IDC wishes to inform the public that the safety and well-being of those staff is of paramount importance and it is currently being considered as a priority,” the communiqué noted.
