Rotary’s Christmas Lottery-Stepdaughter accepts car on winner’s behalf |29 December 2006
It was Vidot’s stepdaughter, Sharon Leon, who accepted the car from the lottery organizers in a ceremony held infront of the Central Post Office in Victoria.
According to Brian Orr, Rotary Club’s President, the car was purchased by the Club at the duty free rate of R160,000, but its market value, inclusive of trades tax and GST, lies at around R300,000.
At yesterday’s ceremony, it was also revealed that a total amount of R500,000 has been raised through the sale of lottery tickets. But contrary to what was published earlier, Mr Orr explained that not all the money will go towards the hospice project that the Club intends to finance.
“We will use the money partially to take care of our expenses,” he said, “and the outstanding amount, along with funds raised previously from two other activities, will go towards the hospice project”.
The hospice project, which will involve renovating a building at North East Point and turn it into a special hospice for terminally ill patients, is expected to cost R900,000.
According to Mr Orr, money collected all together by the Rotary Club for the project amounts to R600,000. He said that the Club will nonetheless be able to fully finance the project, as they have in principle been guaranteed financial contributions from private donors.
If all goes according to plan, the Club is hoping that work on the hospice will begin as early as February next year.
Meanwhile the lottery organizers have announced that all other winners can collect their prizes from Mr Charlie Ng at Electronic 2000, Orion Complex, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. till 4 p.m. Winners are asked to bring along their ID card and ticket.
For those who did not win any prize, the Rotary Club has thanked them for their contributions to this charity event and assured them that their gift to the less fortunate in society will be put to good use.
