The institute has indeed come of age in terms of the level of training it now offersThe Association of Chartered Certified Accountants’ (ACCA) part 3 course will be launched by the Seychelles Institute of Management (SIM) on January 29, 2007, a spokesperson for the institute said yesterday.

“Long gone will be the days when to become a chartered accountant, one has to go to the UK to complete part 3 of the ACCA training. All is now available locally,” the spokesperson said.

The part 3 level, also known as the Professional level, is divided into two modules – Essentials and Options. Both modules have been set at an intellectual level equivalent to that expected of a student taking a Masters degree.

“The focus of the syllabuses at this level is to build upon the technical skills already acquired, and explore more advanced professional skills, techniques, and values that are required and used by the expert accountant acting in an advisory or consultancy role at a senior level,” the spokesperson explained.

Over the years SIM has been offering the ACCA part 1 & 2 only, together with the fastest growing technician training offered by the ACCA, i.e. the Certified Accounting Technician popularly know as CAT.

“With the launch (of the ACCA part 3 course) more opportunities will be available to students, including a chance to earn a BSc. Degree in Applied Accounting, offered by a reputable UK University locally,” the spokesperson said.

The range of accountancy courses now available locally are the ACCA professional accountancy (Chartered Accountant) -- all the required 14 modules; BSc. degree in Applied Accounting (awarded by Oxford Brookes University-UK) after completing part 2 of the ACCA programme; and ACCA Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) -- 9 modules).

According to the spokesperson the aim of upgrading accountancy training locally is to help Seychelles place less reliance on expatriates in the field and to strengthen its pool of professionally trained accountants in readiness to become a financial centre of excellence.

Training opportunities will be available to both private and public sector at technician and professional levels.
