Seychelles represented at world scouts Jamboree in UK |30 July 2007
Scouts aged 14 to -17 from around the world are participating in this event which forms part of activities marking 100 years of scouting.
“The World Jamboree is larger than the Olympic Games and is also the largest regular event organized by the World Organization of the Scout Movement,” said John Marie, the Scouts Commissioner for International Relations and the person in charge of the Seychellois Scouts delegation at the Jamboree.
The first Scout camp took place in England in 1907 on Brownsea Island off the coast of England. The United Kingdom is hosting the 21st World Scout Jamboree this year, under the theme “One World One Promise”. This time round Hylands Park on the outskirts of Chelmsford Essex has been transformed into a small tented city.
“This centenary is celebrated in such a way as to ensure that young scouts like myself can look back at the fabulous opportunities and adventures that scouting can provide as a base for later life,” said one smiling young Seychellois Scout .
“It is above all an educational event to promote peace and understanding among young people like us, all over the world and we will be offering our prestigious coco de mer to the movement when we get there”.
“Like any Scout event, the World Scout Jamboree offers participants a programme that enables them to develop all facets of their character,” said Holbert Jean, Commisioner for Cub Scouts and second troop leader.
“The programme proposes a wide variety of activities and also places great importance on the way the young people take part, by offering them interaction and real participation in everyday life on their campsite”.
The Seychellois Scouts delegation left Seychelles on Thursday last week and will return on August 10.
The Seychelles Scouts Association has thanked the British High Commission in Victoria, the Seychelles Tourism Board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Environment, IOT, the Solidarity Fund One World One Promise, the President’s Office, the parents of the participants and all individuals who have contributed in one way or another towards making the 21st Jamboree experience possible for the local delegation.
