Marie-Antoinette Alexis new mayor of Victoria |03 August 2007

She replaces Mrs Florence Benstrong who has retired.

Ms Alexis was until the restructuring of government early last month the principal secretary for social affairs. She became an adviser to the Minister for Social Development & Health following the restructuring.

Ms Alexis started work as a teacher and later joined the social services section in government. She was also a youth worker and served as an administration director.

The new mayor of Victoria is keen on youth and sports developments. She was a leading Seychellois sportswoman in the 1970s when she was promoted to captain of the successful Seychelles national netball team.  As a player, she was also very active in the St Francis netball team of Baie Lazare, her native district.
