Weightlifting: UESAKA International Club Tournament-“This is my best medal ever,” says Thélermont |08 September 2007
With a total of 195kg after clinching 90kg in snatch and 105kg in clean-and-jerk, Thélermont is occupying second place overall out of 43 lifters in the 69-kg category.
The UESAKA International Club Tournament was introduced four years ago by the Oceania Weightlifting Federation (OWF), an affiliate of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), with the prime aim of giving lifters at club level the opportunity to compete against each other at world level.
According to the WOF, the UESAKA ICT gives all the existing clubs worldwide the chance to compete against each other without any cost attached as the contestants are assessed and ranked according to their performance results.
“I was aware that my performances were being assessed but I was not expecting a silver medal,” a delighted Thélermont told Sports Nation.
Still nursing a shoulder injury, Thélermont will miss out on the World Weightlifting Championship scheduled for September 14-26 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, thus delaying her attempts to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
“I still have two more international competitions coming early next year and if I do not qualify for the Olympic Games I will retire from the sport. Initially, I had planned to retire at the end of next year but this will all depend on my performance at the two competitions. I will be 30 soon and I think that by then it will be time for me to start thinking about my future family-wise rather than sport-wise,” added Thélermont who is currently benefiting from an Olympic scholarship.
Other than Thélermont, four other female Seychelles female weightlifters also feature on the UESASKA IC rankings. They are Katsia Télémaque (fifth out of 29 lifters in the 48-kg category), Naira Uzice (17th out of 30 lifters in the 53-kg category), Clementina Agricole (fifth out of 47 lifters in the 58-kg category and Brenda Lozaique (18th out of 48 lifters in the 63-kg category).
The following are the rankings of some Seychellois male weightlifters: Ian Rose (14th out of 86 lifters in the 62-kg category), Romeo Siméon (30th out of 117 lifters in the 69-kg category), Charles Siméon (21st out of 154 lifters in the 77-kg category), Terrence Dixie (30th out of 118 lifters in the 85-kg category), Elvis Jeanne (17th out of 84 lifters in the 94-kg category), Robert Kilindo (23rd out of 65 lifters in the 105-kg category), Dominic Ferley (30th out of 65 lifters in the 105kg category) and Frank Accouche (20th out of 63 lifters in the +105-kg category).
