Creating a solid base for a strong economy |22 October 2007
President Michel made this remark at the end of a visit he made at Au Cap on Saturday to discuss projects that are on the cards for the district as well as view how work was progressing on ongoing ones.
The President was responding to questions about his vision and plans to double the country’s GDP in the next ten years as laid down in the Strategy 2017 document and how the ordinary people in the communities are set to benefit from this wealth.
President Michel said that when government decides to create the fundamental base on which to develop our economy and create more wealth, the overriding principle is that the people should benefit from this wealth that is created.
But in order to create a solid base for a strong economy, the people must understand that there are certain sacrifices that have to be made, sacrifices that are necessary if they are to benefit from the wealth that this strong economy will generate, President Michel said.
He noted that it is this wealth that will allow the government to continue funding the construction of more facilities such as roads, schools, houses in the districts that the people themselves will benefit from.
“The Seychellois is an intelligent people who understand the need for sacrifices if the country is to have a strong economic base which will subsequently generate more wealth from which we will all benefit,” President Michel said.
It is in this light that he has called for the understanding and support of all Seychellois with regard to the sacrifices that have to be made as the country forges ahead towards achieving its goals of doubling its GDP by 2017.
