Airtel marks start of 10th year anniversary

Airtel’s headquarters at Providence in 1998 (left) and todayThere were about 2,500 mobile customers at the time of launch in Seychelles. Airtel contributed to a significant increase in the mobile market share. Airtel entered the market in 1998, reducing the international calling rates by 58% (an average SR16 per minute to SR6.75 per minute) and local call rates by 40%.

In just one year of operation, Airtel had registered over 2,300 customers. The mobile market has progressively grown and today we can confidently boast of having captured 54% of the mobile market.

The launch of Airtel services broke the telecommunications monopoly and brought about major changes in the way this particular industry as a whole was perceived. It opened the market to competition and took it from a supply driven market where mobile services in particular was considered as a luxury and available to only a few, to becoming a consumer driven market. Overnight expectations for quality service became the driving force pushing the operators to upgrade their service levels and evaluate their Airtel’s headquarters at Providence in 1998 (left) and todayprices.

Much of Airtel’s success is attributed to its dynamism, innovativeness and a need for being at par with the rest of the world on the technological highway. As a result, apart from reducing tariffs and making mobiles affordable, we strive to stay abreast with consumer trends internationally and deliver them locally.

Airtel was the first to introduce the concept of 24-hour Customer Service, Prepaid cards & vouchers, value added services such as SMS, Ringtones, logos, chat, data fax services and for the corporate Customers a Virtual PABX solution or Business Group Services.

These services were supported by a top of the line Ericsson switch and 27 BTS sites on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue back in 1998. Eight years later, keeping up with the technological evolution, Airtel has installed a new 2G/EDGE/3G HSDPA enabled network and with additional sites extending coverage on remote islands like Coetivy. In addition, Airtel has replaced its original fixed line switch with a feature packed Ericsson AXE 10 which supports new applications such as Call Conferencing, call completion service, multiple subscriber number & a host of other services.

Airtel has received tremendous support from customers in the Telecommunications industry from consumers, organizations and the government over the years.
