Independent School wins public speaking contest |16 October 2008
The event, in the auditorium of the National Institute of Education last week, aimed to encourage students to speak in public, gaining self-confidence and improving their language skills.
Teams of three children from six primary schools took part, five state and one private.
The schools were free to choose any topic for their presentation, and subjects included children’s rights, the media and their influence on our children, climate change and dieting.
All presentations were given in English and three judges decided the outcome.
The Independent School won the R600 first prize, followed in second place by Glacis School, winning R450. The third prize of R300 was awarded to La Misere School.
Adam Furneau from the Independent School won R150 as best speaker. The judges also voted Emilie Desir from Plaisance Primary best chairperson. Since there was no cash prize for this category, she will be given a present.
The contest, organised by the Co-curricular Unit and Primary School Section of the Ministry of Education, was attended by ministry officials, students and teachers.
Monia Delpech, coordinator of the unit, said the contest will be held every two years.
