In an interview at the Hilton Northolme Hotel yesterday morning, the jet-lagged beauty
Miss Marie – first princess in this year’s Miss Seychelles Islands contest – left for Zabrze in Poland three weeks before the Miss Intercontinental pageant to train for the event.
After several rounds of interviews with the judges, Miss Marie was placed in the first 15 out of 110 beauty queens from all over the world to win the Miss Intercontinental Africa title.
Although this did not bring her a cash prize, she now has a contract with the Miss Intercontinental organisers to represent the African continent.
The director of the Miss Seychelles Islands pageant, Susie Pierre, also attended the event as Miss Marie’s director and chaperone.
Miss Pierre said she learned, after talking to the judges and other directors at the event, that Sophia’s looks were seen as exotic, which helped to win her the African title.
“The other girls at the pageant were a bit hyper and over-excited, and I think the fact that Sophia was calm, cool and collected, always waiting for her turn, helped her win points with the judges,” she said.
Miss Intercontinental was the first in a series of beauty contests in which the winners of the Miss Seychelles Islands pageant are due to take part.
Miss Seychelles Islands 2008 – Elena Angione – will compete in the Miss World pageant in Johannesburg, South Africa, on December 13.
And second princess Nathalie Domingue will take part in either Miss East Africa in Burundi or Top Models of the World in Egypt.
Miss Pierre said the pageant Miss Domingue will go to will depend on how safe the chosen venues in those countries are.
Meanwhile Miss Marie, who had just flown from Poland to Seychelles, was rushed out of the press gathering to catch the next flight to her home island Praslin – celebrity style!
