Tax levied on gambling-● As deadline for rental tax registration is extended

He said this will give government extra revenue of between R7 million and R8 million a year.Mr Nusse

The tax is normally levied on the turnover, but Mr Nusse said that in gambling “the margins are very small, so it will be calculated on the net. We will take the wagers and subtract the payout, and GST will be paid on what is left.”

There are seven gambling centres in the country.
Mr Nusse also spoke about rental tax, saying that out of an estimated 1,000 houses whose owners are expected to pay 15% GST on their rent, owners of 800 have turned up so far and paid R1.8 million.

The other 200 or so have not yet registered and they have now been given until March 31 to do so.

All landlords were expected to register with the commission before December 31, 2008 and get the necessary forms and information to enable them pay the GST.

Mr Nusse said government expects to get R15 million a year from the GST on rental accommodation.
