Boxing-Bonne KOs Havelock on Julie’s return |12 May 2009
Coming off a good win over the less-experienced Alexander Durup, Stephane Bonne again won inside the time limit.
He had beaten Durup three weeks ago after catching him on the chin with a left hook with 42 seconds left in the second round of his 60kg fight to force the referee to make a second count of eight, before stopping the fight.
This time, with a devastating left-right combination to the head with just nine seconds gone in the third round, Bonne sent Havelock sprawling to the canvas. Referee Rival Payet took a look at Havelock, who had taken a count of eight 44 seconds into the second round, and declared the 62kg fight over without taking a second count.
“My coach (Hansel Larue) wanted me to knock him out early. But I wanted to tease my opponent before finishing him off,” said the technically and physically superior 16-year-old Bonne of the Anse Royale boxing club.
“It’s my mistake. I dropped my guard and took a hard blow,” said Havelock.
“I’ll be back to take revenge.”
Another of coach Larue’s protégés, Daniel Mothé, got his second victory this year in the night’s third bout.
He didn’t take long to punish Tony Moustache, landing a straight into his opponent’s unguarded mouth at one minute 06 seconds (1:06) of the first round, and the referee decided to make a count of eight.
With blood pouring out of Moustache’s mouth after a cut on his lower lip, he was examined by medical officer Tony Volcy, who found a loose tooth. This could have resulted from improper wearing of the gumshield that protects the teeth. The referee awarded the bout to Mothé on the ‘referee stopped contest’ (RSC) rule.
There were eight more bouts on the night’s programme, and two of those were won by a walkover. Yannick Moustache walked over Aaron Santache, who did not get the green light from medical officer Volcy to box in the 55kg division, and injured Chris Marimba chose not to fight Keddy Agnes in the 77kg category.
Eric Bervas and Dave Aglaé met in an exhibition 57kg bout.
African champion in 2004, Julie, who last competed in November 2007 in Beijing, China, during the ‘Good Luck Beijing’ international boxing invitational tournament, lacked his usual high fitness level and looked rusty. But he did just enough to beat Nelson Molle 3-0 in a 64kg fight.
While Molle was unhappy with the result, Julie said he was confident of victory.
“I knew I would win even though I trained for just two weeks,” said the 25-year-old.
For the second time in three weeks, Dario Gabriel won by RSC. Winner over Julio Dugasse after a third count of eight, 40 seconds into the second round of his previous bout, Gabriel, 15, stopped the taller Aldo Ernesta with 1:26 gone in the second round of last Friday night’s first fight – in the 44kg division. After taking the full blow of his opponent’s upper-cut, Ernesta stayed on the canvas and was counted out.
Michel Télémaque won on a points decision – 2-1 – against Richie Hoareau in his 54kg bout.
The other 54kg fight pitted senior boxer Dave César against junior fighter Stan Nicette. They put on a thoroughly enjoyable show for their fans as they took turns to attack each other.
In the end, the more-experienced César, 22, won 3-0 and said he made his 17-year-old opponent work in the ring.
The MacFarlène Estrale/Alva Botsoie 64kg bout of three rounds of three minutes each started cold and heated up quickly as the two traded punches. Though Botsoie, 20, controlled the fight to win 2-1, Estrale gave as good as he got.
This was Botsoie’s fourth victory in as many bouts against 23-year-old Estrale, who has competed in many international competitions.
The next boxing competition is scheduled for Friday May 22 at Anse Royale.
