Yachting-Esther wins Laser Cup ‘A’

Esther, who sails a radial boat, did not get a win in the 12 races although he finished with Esther, Laser Cup ‘A’ winnerthe lowest points tally of 25 after his two worst finishes – two fourth places – had been discarded. His best finish was second place on six occasions.

The sailors competing in three types of Laser boats – radial 5.7, standard 7.06 and Laser 4.7 – had to wait for the wind to pick up before going out at sea for the last race on Saturday to determine the final placings.

Roy Govinden, who did not compete in the first four races and won seven of the eight he took part in, amassed 31 points to finish second, while his twin bother Rodney was ranked third with 42 points after getting five first-place finishes, two second positions and did not compete in five other races.

More experienced than the rest of the field, the twin brothers competed in standard boats.

Laser gold medallist at the Ninth All-Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria, in 2007, Meggy Gertrude was the highest ranked female competitor in her radial boat as she settled for fourth position with 42 points.

Her best finish was third in races five and 12.
Kenrick Victor was ranked fifth with 45 points, Ian Valentin sixth with 53, Ricky Adeline seventh with 62, Daniel De La Fontaine eighth with 66, Paul Morel ninth with 92 and Beth Gertrude 10th with 95.

Meanwhile, in the Optimist Cup ‘B’, Cup ‘A’ winner Ryan Domingue leads with six points after four wins and a second position.

Ryan De Sylva is second with 10 points, while the remaining 10 positions are occupied by Aubrey Sophola (third with 15), Guilly Esther (fourth with 22), Jonathan Tamatave (fifth with 32), Nicholas Adam (sixth with 33), Mohamed Malbrook (seventh with 48), Greg Esparon (eighth with 50), Charles Ally (ninth with 52), Jean-Luc Lebon (10th with 52) and Jonathan Fred (11th with 53).
