Basketball: National League-Lesperance equals season-high 10 treys, Baya extend win-run to 12 |29 July 2009
With player of the year Jean-Paul ‘JP’ Camille scoring a game-high 26 points, including two three-pointers, to lead three teammates – Dave Roseline (17 points), Robert Léon (15) and Hendricks Denis (11) – in double figures, Baya missed the century mark by one as they gained their 12th consecutive win with a 99-53 victory over RC Dynamics.
As usual, skipper Jean-Paul Desaubin led RC Dynamics in scoring with 22 points, although his team lost all four quarters, 14-27, 10-20, 13-22 and 16-30, to drop further into the doldrums with their 10th defeat in 13 games.
Lesperance on fire
Against Praslin Warriors the weekend before, Premium Cobras’ Lesperance rained down a record 10 treys, and a week later it was MBU Rockers’ turn to taste the shooting guard’s bitter pill in an 83-114 loss.
Lesperance, 25, came into the match again wanting to shoot lights out from long distance and he was right on target, scoring 10 baskets from downtown – two in the first quarter, three in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth – to match his season-leading mark.
Quite an impressive feat for the Seychelles international, whose 38 points were two fewer than Nigerian teammate Alao Solomon’s game-high 40 as the Cobras avenged a first-round 76-85 loss to the Rockers to stay unbeaten in the second round for their 10th victory in 13 games and bring their points tally to 23.
The defeat was the fourth for the Rockers, whose playmaker and captain Nigel Sinon finished with 30 points, and it would have been interesting to see how many three-pointers international swingman Cyril Agrippine would have scored had he not fouled out midway through the fourth quarter. He finished with six buckets from behind the arc for 18 of his 30 points.
PLS Hawks had a good start to their match with a 21-7 first-quarter win against Mont Fleuri Dawgz, but they had to battle hard for a 10-point margin 77-67 win after losing the second and fourth quarters, 17-22 and 20-24.
Although Sandy Julienne, Neddy ‘Oye’ Fanchette and captain Bernard Bristol fouled out, the Hawks were led in scoring by veteran Heribert Derjacques, with 12 points from four three-pointers.
For the second game running, Aubrey ‘Spider’ Adeline led the Dawgz in scoring with 13 points despite his team losing for the ninth time in 13 games for 17 points.
Warriors win
Beau Vallon Heat players must have already taken a lot of heat from coach Valli Ismaël after a heavy 47-71 loss to fellow strugglers Praslin Warriors.Dave Sabadin scored 14 points for the Heat, who have now lost 10 times in 12 outings.
Captain Jackson Auguste scored 24 points, Joseph Souffe got 20 and Edmond Félicie added 17 as the Warriors celebrated victory for only the second time this season.
Angels made a poor start against Cascade Bullets, losing the first quarter 5-16, but they played their way back into the encounter, outscoring their opponents 24-14, 17-15 and 35-5 in the remaining quarters for a 31-point margin – 81-50 – victory.
Diminutive shooting guard Steven Servina again came up big for Angels with a game-high 29 points, and Kieren Agathine added 26.
Dan Côme again scored in double digits with 27 points, but he could not stop the Bullets from losing.
In the women’s league, champions HotShots bounced back from their 48-56 loss to Mont Fleuri as they steamrollered Juniors 105-28.
Seychelles international Beguitta Fontaine had an enjoyable Saturday afternoon with seven three-pointers for 21 of her game-high 35 points.
Centre Tina Agathine, who was absent in the loss to Mont Fleuri, added 21 including a trey, and Jenita Toussaint connected three times from long range for nine of her 11 points as HotShots won their fifth match in six outings.
Captained by Irene Bau, winless Juniors got seven points from J. Fanchette, and Doris Oreddy added six.
