Athletics: Special Events One competition-It’s Khan’s show

KHAN …new 60m record holderKhan, who will be 20 on March 5, stopped the clock at 7.4 seconds to slice one 10th of a second off Joanna Houareau’s old best time of 7.5 seconds set on January 17, 1998.

A member of the newly formed Shooting Star club and coached by former hurdler Giovanni Fanny, Khan said she was “shocked” to learn that the women’s senior 60m record is now hers.

“Getting a Seychelles record in my first race of the season will surely serve as a motivation for the rest of the year,” she told Sports Nation.

“My aim now is to continue working harder in training to improve my 100m personal best of 12.51 seconds. As for the eighth Indian Ocean Island Games next year, it won’t be easy, but I feel I can do something good if I get down to some serious training and maintain my focus,” she added.

The men’s 60m race was won by Aga Sonix’s Danny D’Souza, but not after some drama in the second heat.
After Shooting Star’s Mervin Loizeau was disqualified for a first false start, the remaining four sprinters settled into the blocks but Yannick Vidot was quicker than starter Paul Nioze’s gun. As the competitors were not recalled, probably because the officials did not spot the infringement, D’Souza found himself trailing by almost two metres, but he used a burst of speed in the final 20 metres to cross the finish line first in 6.5 seconds to once again equal the hand-timing senior record he shares with Alex Faure (March 23, 1996 and Danny Benoit (February 21, 1998).

The first time he ran 6.5 seconds was on February 16, 2008, but the 22-year-old is the sole holder of the 60m electronic record of 6.93 seconds, which he got on Valentine’s Day (February 14) last year.

His time then was five-hundredths of a second faster than the previous best of 6.98 seconds clocked by Nelson Lucas on March 3, 2000.

Running in the first heat, Gelick Joseph of the Arsu club equalled the male colt (under-14) record of 7.5 seconds, which Marius Vinda has been holding since February 9, 2008.

Sprinters were not the only ones in the limelight on Saturday, as young female long distance runner Stephanie Underwood of the East Coast club established a hand-timing girls (under-16) category mile record of 6 minutes 22.9 seconds.
