Marcel Fayon Memorial tennis tournament-Rene to meet Lauro in women’s singles final |27 February 2010

In today’s final scheduled for 4pm, Sarah Rene will meet Gloria Lauro.
Rene booked her place in the final with a 2-0 (6-1, 6-0) victory over player of the year Chloé Romain in the semifinal.

Showing some good form, former number one female player Rene beat Ginette York in her first-round match, edged Mary-May Isnard, who has made a comeback, 2-1 (6-4, 4-7, 10-7) in the second round and eliminated national team player Nathaniel Morel 2-0 (6-1, 6-0) in the quarterfinal.

Lauro needed 2 hours 30 minutes to get past veteran Linda Samson to make an appearance in the final of the year’s first competition.

Losing the first set 2-6 to Samson, Lauro then led 5-3 in the second before winning 7-5 after her veteran opponent had tied the score at 5-5.

In the tie-break, Lauro rushed into the lead at 6-1 and 7-2, but Samson pulled level at 7-7. However, she could not sustain the momentum as the younger Lauro won the set 11-9 to set up a final appearance against Rene.

Only one men’s singles finalist was known at the time of going to press. Former national team coach Tim Horpinitch booked his place in the final with a 2-0 (6-3, 6-0) victory over former Seychelles number one Selwyn Knowles in the semifinal.

The other last-four match between French coach Frederic Canale and Shane Pothin was expected to be played yesterday.

Meanwhile, the women’s and men’s doubles finals were also to be played yesterday.

The pair of Lauro and Stephanie Ah-Shung were to meet the duo of Romain and Isnard in the women’s doubles final.

In the semifinals, Lauro and Ah-Shung earned a 2-0 (6-4, 6-4) win over Julie Fayon and Rene, while Romain and Isnard defeated Samson and Peggy Chang-Tave 2-0 (6-1, 6-3).

Markhous Kanté and Trevor Camille were to face Horpinitch and Johann in yesterday’s men’s doubles final.

The Kanté/Camille duo needed three sets to beat the pair of Pothin and Darren Dine 2-1 (6-3, 5-7, 10-2) in the semifinal.
