Weber siblings summit Mount Kilimanjaro |17 April 2010
Son and daughter of Josette and Norman Weber, Liam and Rachel are probably the first two Seychellois to climb to the summit of the highest peak in Africa – 5,895m above sea level – and they flew the Seychelles flag while on the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.
After starting the climb on March 30 and choosing the Rongai/Marunga route going through four different climatic zones, it took Liam and Rachel five days to reach the summit and two to descend.
Their big brother Alexander, 16, made it to the Stella Point which is 5,756m above sea level and their parents Josette and Norman reached Gilman’s Point (5,681m above sea level).
Alexander, Liam and Rachel are ex-students of the International School on Mahe and currently reside in South Africa with their parents.
According to the family, the Weber children did the climb to the highest free standing mountain in Africa in a bid to raise funds for an underprivileged school in South Africa that is in dire need of help with rebuilding classrooms.
Part of the money raised will also be donated to a charity for disaster relief in Haiti.
The Weber family trained for this hike by climbing mountains in South Africa, including Table Mountain, and in Lesotho and by going on weekend hikes across various parts of South Africa for six months
