Golf-Asba wins Club Championship title with birdie |26 June 2010
As customary, the competition – divided into three divisions, gold, silver and bronze depending on the players’ handicap – was played over three days and 54 holes.
Andrade led on the first two days with a gross score of 247 – seven strokes ahead of the pack. The only two players in contention and able to pose a threat to his challenge for another championship trophy were Alix Esparon and Patrick Asba.
His lead lasted until the seventh hole on the third day when he drove into the rough and no matter how hard he tried to make up for this mistake, he still ended up with a six compared to Asba's four.
Going down the eighth hole, he had one of his worst shanks and ended in the rough again on his second shot to card a six again. With Asba's four on the same hole and playing one group ahead, the lead was cut to three.
Andrade found himself in the same situation on the second nine following a bogey on the 16th and a very bad shank on the 17th. By this time, Asba was playing consistently and did not drop shots.
After Andrade double-bogeyed on the 17th, Asba drew level on points and the game had to go to sudden death played over three holes.
They were again level on the first hole but Andrade should have won on the second. Luck was not on his side as his putt just could not find the hole.
On the last hole, Andrade shot into the coconut trees and one could see panic in his eyes when Asba drove his ball straight down the middle of the fairway, setting himself for a good second shot.
Andrade knew the game was over and Asba beat him in style – hitting a long putt for a birdie.
Francis Mondon – the most consistent golfer during the three days of golf – won the prize for the best net score.
Prizes were presented by Joe Morin representing the sponsors – Mahe Shipping, Bunson Travel and 7º South.
Outgoing club captain Richard D'Offay, on behalf of the members, thanked the sponsors for once again supporting this championship, which was a great success.
