Code of conduct for schools comes into force |11 September 2010

In line with the education reform and introduction of the pastoral care system in schools early this year, the Department of Education has embarked on an awareness campaign to ensure that school staff, students, parents and the public in general know what the code is about and how it will be applied in the school system.

As Mrs Mondon said: “The new code of conduct for primary and secondary schools highlights the different aspects of behaviour and standards that are acceptable and recommendable in a school community.

“High standards of behaviour are important in helping children to feel safe and learn. Parents and guardians have a key role to play in promoting and supporting good behaviour.”

The Department of Education is urging parents to get their copy as soon as possible so as to join schools in their efforts not only to educate our future generation but also to produce responsible and empowered citizens.

The code of conduct will be available in all primary and secondary schools at a cost of R5.   There are two versions, one for primary students and one for secondary students. Parents who have more than one child attending the same school will be able to buy one copy only.

Students who are expected to leave school at the end of 2010 (ie P6, S5), as well as those in crèche, will not be sold a copy. Copies will, however, be made available to these students at school.
