Red Cross launches Pakistan floods appeal |11 September 2010

It is joining the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the project to help up to 130,000 families – around 910,000 people. The worldwide appeal aims to raise €56.3 million.

The worst floods to hit Pakistan since 1929 have affected an estimated 15.4 million people – almost one in every 10 Pakistanis. The death toll now stands at more than 1,475 people, and 2,052 have been injured. More than 680,000 people have been evacuated, and the latest estimate is that up to a million houses have been damaged or destroyed.

The RCSS is raising money as part of the global Red Cross movement, and stresses that it can only accept cash donations.

These can be deposited in its disaster victims account No. 101069230 at Barclays Bank or can be made by calling at its Providence headquarters, which can be contacted on telephone 374544.
