The European connection |24 June 2011
And the lasting historical connections are constantly reinforced by the large number of Seychellois living in Europe today and the contingent of European expatriates who now call Seychelles home.
But despite these lasting and living links, the small matter of several thousand kilometres of ocean and continent that stretch between the two make keeping in touch between Seychelles and Europe an expensive business.
So to fill the demand for a low cost, high-quality phone link to Europe, Kokotalk from Kokonet is now letting users call countries in western Europe for as little as 99c plus GST per minute.
“Europe, particularly France, the UK and Italy are home to a lot of Seychellois. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to stay in touch with their loved ones in Europe, so we’ve introduced 99 cent Kokotalk calls to most of western Europe,” said Kokonet’s sales and marketing manager, Romano Laurence.
Kokotalk is a telephone system introduced by Kokonet which lets users make low-cost international calls. Despite using the internet to relay the calls, users at either end of a Kokotalk call use their normal handset or landline phone to make and receive the call.
“Our calling cards give users all the flexibility of their usual telephone, but let them make calls at a fraction of the cost,” said Mr Laurence.
Using a pre-paid Kokotalk card purchased from Kokonet or most small shops, users can call France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK for only 99c plus GST per minute.
An initial success with expatriate workers based in Seychelles, Kokotalk is finding increasing market share with local users looking for the most cost-effective way to stay in touch with friends and family overseas.
“We know that there are almost as many Seychellois living overseas as there are in Seychelles, and we want to make it more affordable for people to speak to their loved ones,” said Mr Laurence.
