In search of a monument for Ile Perseverance |27 June 2011

The monument, to be erected at the junction of Perseverance Avenue and the Perseverance Highway, should reflect and depict the national theme for this year which is Winning for Seychelles.

The competition has been initiated by the National Theme Committee in collaboration with the National Arts Council of Seychelles.

It is open to all artists who are citizens of Seychelles. The chosen design for the monument will win R25,000.
The main aim of the competition is to give the public at large a chance to express themselves in an artistic way on how they can relate to the theme.

The monument is expected to be a lasting reminder of the concerted effort that we the people of Seychelles should make in order to win and always progress, the organisers have said.

Details of the competition which have already been published in the Nation newspaper are as follows:

• The artist must be prepared to work closely with the person contracted to work on realising the project.

• The proposed monument should be original and thought provoking – depicting victory, perseverance, togetherness and harmony.

• The artist must complete and sign a registration form which can be collected at the National Arts Council, Place de la République, Victoria everyday during working hours.

The artwork should be presented as follows:

• One A4 size sheet stating the approach, philosophy and intent and how the attached criteria have been considered.
• One A-size sheet giving detailed description of the proposed monument, accompanied by a flat design and maquette, or in 3D digital format. 
 
• Written specifications of materials to be used, special features, lighting at night and landscaping.

All completed registration forms, artwork proposals, maquettes should be submitted to the National Arts Council not later than July 15.

The committee which will select the winning artwork will comprise of a representative from the Department of Community Development, the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Environment, the Seychelles Land Transport Agency, the Ministry of Land Use and Habitat, the National Arts Council, the Ile Perseverance Community-based group and the administrator of Ile Perseverance.

The National Theme Committee reserves the right to work with the winning artist to develop or modify the proposal to suit the purpose for which it is intended.
