Soroptimist Club raises cancer awareness through pink link |02 November 2013
The Soroptimist International – Club of Victoria organised a walk last Saturday to raise awareness about breast cancer.
Soroptimist International – Club of Victoria members together with friends, family and volunteers sold pink ribbons and distributed brochures throughout Victoria.
At 12 noon, they all met on the steps of Trinity House to form the traditional ‘Pink Link’. After that, the members walked along Francis Rachel street to the Seychelles Hospital. The money raised during Saturday morning’s activities will be given to the Ministry of Health to help those suffering from cancer.
Soroptimist International – Club of Victoria is part of a vibrant international organisation of today’s professional women, committed in creating strong and peaceful communities worldwide by improving the lives of women and children.
Over the past 18 years, funds raised by the Soroptimist Club of Victoria have been used to help various organisations nationally to improve health care facilities, educational needs and cater to the needs of the more vulnerable in our society.
This year, Cable & Wireless has united with Soroptimist Club to raise awareness for breast cancer. The members of the Soroptimist club, who initiated the cause, have accepted a generous donation of R15,000 by Cable & Wireless and have placed collection boxes at Cable & Wireless’ customer service centre in Victoria to collect funds that will go towards the cause.
In this partnership, Cable & Wireless and the Soroptimist Club shared the cost to print 3,000 brochures which consist of information regarding ‘early breast cancer detection, the need for regular check-ups and myths and truths about the disease.’
“We are glad to be a part of this important cause and hope this initiative can help save the lives of women,” said Terry Servina, Cable & Wireless’ Public Relations and Events Manager.
According to a recent survey, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women worldwide. One in every nine women will develop breast cancer at some time in their life. It is essential therefore for women to recognise that early detection can help save their lives.
“Soroptimist Club wishes to thank Cable & Wireless for their contribution. We hope that members of the public will donate generously at the collection boxes placed at the CWS’ customer service centre,” said Eurika Naidoo, president of the Soroptimist Club of Victoria.
