Football: Champions meet in cup competition |14 January 2014
Local champions – Côte d’Or (Barclays league division one), Revengers (Barclays league division two), Rude Boyz (Barclays league division three) and St Michel (Intelvision Cup, Airtel Cup and President’s Cup) – will meet in a special competition, Champions Cup.
The early stage of the competition organised by the Seychelles Football Federation will be played over two legs with Côte d’Or meeting Revengers in a Praslin derby, while St Michel will be taking on Rude Boyz.
The first match of the competition on Saturday January 18 is between Côte d’Or and Revengers at 4pm at the Amitié Stadium, followed by the St Michel/Rude Boyz fixture at 4.30pm at Stad Linite. The second leg matches is on Wednesday January 22 at 5pm on Praslin and at 5.30pm at Stad Linite.
The two losers of the two-leg fixtures will meet in a single match on Saturday January 25 at 3pm at Stad Linite to decide the third place finishers.
As for the final, it will be played over two matches between the winners of the two two-leg fixtures. The first final is on Saturday January 25 at 5.30pm at Stad Linite and the second on Saturday February 1 at 3pm at the Amitié Stadium.
Tickets for all matches cost R25.
Côte d’Or and St Michel will surely be using the Champions Cup as part of their preparation for the African club competitions they have enrolled in.
Barclays league division one champions Côte d’Or will open their 2014 Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League campaign against Kabuscorp do Palanca of Angola, while St Michel will play ASSM Elgeco Plus of Madagascar in the Caf Confederation Cup.
On their debut in the Caf Champions League, champions Côte d’Or will travel to Angola to face Kabuscorp do Palanca in the first leg of the qualifying round during the weekend of February 7-9, 2014.
They will then play the return leg encounter the following weekend (February 14-16, 2014).
The winners will face either former champions Zamalek of Egypt or AS Douanes of Niger in the next stage of the tournament.
In the Caf Confederation Cup being contested by 42 clubs, St Michel will meet ASSM Elgeco Plus of Madagascar in the preliminary round.
Coach Ralph Jean-Louis’ St Michel will host the Malagasy side on the weekend of February 7-9, 2014, with the return leg scheduled for February 14-16, 2014.
If they happen to win the two-leg preliminary round fixture, St Michel will progress to the first round where they will meet the winners of the match between How Mine (Zimbabwe) and Chuoni (Zanzibar). The first leg match is during the weekend of February 28-March 2 and the second leg during the weekend of March 7-9, 2014.
