Seychelles Disabled People’s Organisation loses key member |11 April 2014

Daniel Savy, a well-known and respected figure in society for his active role in fighting for the cause of people living with disabilities, has passed away.

Mr Savy, in his late 60s, died on April 4 and was buried on April 9. He was the chairperson of the Seychelles Disabled People’s Organisation.

He was himself disabled after a fall from a breadfruit tree at the age of 16 left him with a fractured right leg which was later amputated.
But in 1970 he got his first artificial limb which was an interesting breakthrough in his life.

“I was so happy as I was able to move about more easily,” he recounted in an Up Close interview with Nation in December 2011.

Mr Savy was part of a group of disabled persons who, back in the late 1980s, oversaw the setting up of an association for the disabled and the establishment in 1993 of an Act which a year latercreated the National Council for the Disabled.

Apart from being very active locally, Mr Savy also represented Seychellois disabled in various forums in the region and internationally.

Mr Savy, who believed in working hard to be successful in life, had done different jobs. A certified accountant until his death, he had his own small private practice as a public scribe.

The father of seven children – one of whom unfortunately passed away at a young age – Mr Savy died a very contented husband, grandfather as well. He leaves behind his wife, six children and over 10 grandchildren.
