Interview with youth worker Lita Onezime |05 September 2014
This month we have the honour to make the acquaintance of Lita Onezime, one of the longest serving employees of the National Youth Council with 27 years experience.
Miss Lita, can you tell us about yourself?
I’m a 47-year-old woman currently living at Anse Louis. God is the inspiration for my everyday life. I am an open person willing to help each and everyone in one way or another. I believe in myself and my faith is in my Lord Jesus.
What drove or inspired you to become a youth worker?
I studied at the Seychelles Polytechnic to become a youth worker and my motivation is to work with the youth.
Do you see youth work as a flourishing career in Seychelles nowadays?
Yes for sure, there are a lot of challenges, but you get the opportunity to explore, meet new people and learn different things each day. You also get the privilege to develop new skills and new talents like counselling. Youth work also helps you to become a good listener and motivates you to always find time to help others. In addition it helps you to visualise positively.
How do you perceive the youths of Seychelles today?
The youths of today are often very demanding, very imitative, lacking self-confidence and self-motivation to push them forward. They are easily influenced by peer pressure. At the same time they have a lot of opportunities but some of them do not strive to go forward. They are more attracted to technology and get easily influenced by materialistic things. Often I feel they lack spiritual guidance.
How do you perceive the youths of Seychelles in the next 10 years?
With God’s grace we hope to see a restoration in our youths because they have to be conscious that they should always cry out to the Lord for everything in their lives, and not depend on technology to do everything for them.
What advice would you like to convey to the young people of today?
. Be positive in everything you do in your life and always remember that with God nothing is impossible in your life.
. Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be open to you [Mathew chap 7 verses 7-8].
