SBC’s Radyo Sesel celebrates World Radio Day |14 February 2015
To mark World Radio Day yesterday, SBC’s Radyo Sesel had a live open air broadcasting service on its premises at Union Vale.
In line with this year’s United Nations’ theme ‘Youth and innovation in radio’, some young radio enthusiasts, most of whom did work attachment at Radyo Sesel, were invited to join senior radio presenters to entertain listeners on AM radio.
According to Jeannette Julienne, head of radio, the aim of the open air broadcasting activity was for the youth to have the opportunity to voice out their opinions and comments on the activities and programmes of Radyo Sesel and Paradise FM so that it would help them to improve their contents that would benefit listeners.
The activity also served as a means to encourage the youth to take a career in broadcasting.
The open air studio started at 6am and ended at 6pm before moving back in the studio until 10pm.
In yesterday’s broadcast, the young presenters took part in phone-ins, the reading out of announcements & messages, news presenting and other entertainment programmes.
All of this happened under the watchful eyes and ears of some faithful senior citizens, calling themselves ‘Friends of Radyo Sesel’, who had come to witness the event.
Radyo Sesel, along with Paradise FM (broadcasting in the inside studio) also seized that opportunity to promote the work of behind the scenes workers such as the drivers, security, secretaries, librarians etc.. thus exposing the whole component and function of the two broadcasting services.
This is the fourth time that Radyo Sesel celebrates Radio Day since it was first launched by the United Nations in 2011.
From Seychelles Radio, Radio Television Seychelles (RTS), SBC Radio to Radyo Sesel, it will be 50 years this year since broadcasting has been done from studios at Union Vale.
Mrs Julienne said a host of activities have been planned to mark the occasion as Radyo Sesel will be moving from Union Vale to Hermitage this year also, to give way for the construction of a new broadcast house.
As for the other radio broadcasting service Pure FM, it will be celebrating Radio Day with a live broadcast from 5.30pm to 9pm today onboard Mason’s Travel’s cruise vessel Anahita for its special ‘Pure Love’ programme commerating Valentine’s Day .
