National theme launched on Praslin and La Digue |23 February 2015
Praslinois and Diguois took part in activities organised at the weekend on their respective islands to officially launch this year’s national theme I Love Seychelles.
The ceremony on Praslin took place on Friday on Eve Island and was attended by the chairperson of the national theme steering committee, Minister Idith Alexander, invited guests, members of the committee and the general public. They were entertained with songs, poems and dances related to the national theme and performed by Praslinois.
In her address, Minister Alexander pointed out that the Vallée de Mai, which is a Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) world heritage site, has a rich biodiversity with endemic plants co-existing side by side. On this note, she called on all Praslinois to share the same aspirations as a nation and to bring more progress to our country.
“Together let us sow the seeds of love and say no to social ills that pose a threat to our personal stability and that of the country. Let us promote the spirit of sharing, support one another, care for our neighbours’ children and celebrate the accomplishments of others,” said Minister Alexander.
A similar ceremony took place on La Digue on Saturday February 21. The celebrations got underway with a parade to remind the Diguois of their culture and heritage that make them special. The parade included fishermen, an ox-cart, bicycles and students in their sports attire, to name a few.
This was then followed by patriotic songs, poems and dances by performers of all ages.
Minister Alexander told the Diguois that they have a lot to be proud of. They have made considerable progress in the tourism sector, while at the same time maintained many aspects of their culture.
National theme steering committee chairperson Alexander appealed to the elders of La Digue “not to hesitate to share their knowledge with the youths to ensure that our history and heritage are passed on to our future generation”.
The youths were also encouraged “to listen to the elders because it is through their love and devotion for our country that we are here today”.
Both activities, which were followed by a musical show, were attended by large crowds and were a success.
